Angel in the Isle
Sometimes still I can feel your hands
resting lightly on my youthful shoulder-
I think I smell your aftershave in the morning air
and see Mama smile again like she did when
you would gently hold her.
Time has certainly passed by, since those
days so long ago-
Mama now stands beside you again,
but we still miss her so.
For many years I tried so hard Dad
after you had went away-
To just not acknowledge the emptiness
I felt on Father's Day.
Streams of tears would fall at my feet
and dry slowly in the hours to come-
The day would be over and leave me sad
quiet, blue and lonesome.
Then one day a few years back a five year
old
Angel took my hand-
Please, she asked will you help me, I can't yet read,
but I need a card for my Daddy, he's a special man.
She began to tell me, in an innocent sort of
way,
how it was just her and Daddy, oh and of course her playful
cat-
I thought broken marriage, but then she spoke of heaven-
she said, Mommy is an angel, as she gave my hand a pat.
I wanted so terribly to cry, but her? She
was all smiles,
as I read aloud the captions, allowing her to choose-
Finally she found her message, the note she wanted to say-
and I thanked her, for letting me be of use.
I watched her as she made her way through
the crowds
and faded from my sight-
And now each year on Father's Day-
my heart is in a different light.
She'll never know, that she too was an angel
sent
to re-open a clouded pathway-
To heal the wounds of a hurting heart-
and restore the warmth in skies of gray.
So Dad, now when I feel your hands on my
shoulder
instead of tears, I've learned to smile-
I've returned to the memories of the good times,
and my Angel in the isle.
