- Many a story
- ‘round campfires were told
- by cowboys on haunches
- with reins they would hold
-
- While takin’ a break from
- the range they did ride
- with six–gun an’ holster
- strapped close to their side
-
- And many a song
- ‘round campfires were sung
- as flames blazed high
- with dry buffalo dung
-
- Coffee and jerky
- sometimes made a meal
- but life as a cowboy
- never lost its appeal
-
- Hard ridin’ drovers
- lived fast and free,
- they were tough, rugged men
- out on the prairie
-
- A fire in the night promised
- warmth and goodwill,
- big rocks circled ‘round,
- I can picture it still
-
- After long days journey
- had come to an end,
- they all gathered ‘round
- sharin’ tales with a friend
-
- Then stretched out on bedrolls
- close to the flame
- to rest weary heads
- while their pals did the same
-
- They dreamt of the time
- they’d return to hometowns,
- seein’ their sweethearts
- in white weddin’ gowns
-
- And of mom an’ dad waitin’
- back at the ranch,
- the one they’d own someday,
- if given the chance
-
- For they were just men
- with all life’s desires,
- yes, cowboys made good use
- of those old campfires…
